It’s common to have teeth with white spots or a mottled appearance. This can occur for a variety of reasons and, until fairly recently, could not be treated using a minimally-invasive approach. The only options available were treatments that covered over the natural tooth surface, such as veneers or composite bonding.
White spots (or white spot lesions) are very common and can be caused by a range of factors including fluorosis (overexposure of fluoride to the teeth), enamel hypoplasia (thinner development of the enamel on teeth), demineralisation of the enamel on the teeth, low calcium diet, and poor dental hygiene.
Many people mistake white spots or mottling for staining and think that a uniform colour can be restored through your normal whitening treatments. However, this kind of whitening would make the spots lighter in colour than the rest of the tooth. To effectively remove white spots forever you would need to use icon spot whitening – to target the pores directly.
Icon spot whitening is a minimally invasive, painless and quick technique that uses infiltration to blend the white spots in with the rest of the tooth. First, a special gel is applied to the teeth to open up the pores, before a small amount of tooth-coloured resin is applied. We then use a light to harden the resin and restore natural colour.
