Your oral health routine isn’t complete without regular hygiene appointments to see a dental hygienist. They can get to those hard-to-reach places to provide a professional deep clean – even where the best electric toothbrushes can’t get to. It puts you in the best position to find any problems before symptoms start to show or require treatment.
A dental hygienist is able to remove harmful plaque and deposits of tartar that, if left, can cause periodontal (gum) disease, and other gum and tooth complications. As prevention is better than cure, they can also identify early signs of tooth decay or gum inflammation – so these can be dealt with sooner rather than later.
The length of your hygiene appointment can vary between 30 to 60 minutes and will depend on your dental needs. Your dental hygienist will use specially designed tools to carefully and gently scrape away the build-up of plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around the gum line (scaling) and provide a ‘shine and polish’ to remove any surface stains.
Just like your dentist, your dental hygienist will take the time to get to know you and provide you with tailored advice based on your individual needs and lifestyle – so you can maintain the best oral health hygiene. They will ask you how you look after your teeth and gums, offering you tips on how to improve your oral health routine at home.
You can find our fees on our fees page. You should have hygiene appointments at least as regularly as you visit your dentist to ensure you maintain the very best oral health. Your dental hygienist will advise you how often is best for your needs. Your dentist will assess whether you need to see a dental hygienist, and will refer you to one if needed.
